Now that my local station carries a double-run of "Millionaire" daily, I get to see the Shuffle and Clock formats back-to-back. I always enjoy the Shuffle format a great deal, then, once the clock format comes on, I immediately realize how much better I like it. Lucky!! >.< But I've seen a lot of people complain about the clock as well. I think most of them believe that the clock rushes you and that you can buckle under the pressure and say something you don't want to or wouldn't normally. I think 15 seconds for the first couple of questions isn't much time but 30 seconds and 45 seconds is plenty of time to answer a question. I personally think tweaking the question cues to go along with the clock was awesome! Like you know you're running out of time when the cue starts getting dramatic. But I feel a half hour just isn't enough time for Millionaire. I know it's on everyday but still, I like the show so much that an hour is just better. XD

I'm going to vote for the pre-clock version. Not because I can actually argue why it's better, but just because it's what I grew up loving. To me that's what "Millionaire" is, and everything after it, even if more suspenseful or more clever, is just borrowing the name Purely sentimental!

I personally like Classic Millionaire most. It's probably because of sentimentality too, but for me it's what it all began with. Even though it might me a bit outdated, it's still what made the show a global phenomenon. I can't say that I don't like the Clock Format (great music!) or the 12-question version (except for the music which i find terrible ), but it's simply not the same. I still haven't really made up my mind about Shuffle Millionaire. It's like: 'I kinda love the music, but i kinda hate it. The "hot table" (lol) is kinda cool, but it's ugly. Having the questions and money values shuffled is sorta boring but it's so cool'. I'm indecisive, I know ;D. I guess I can accept everything as long as they don't tie people to towers and let them fall down if they answer a question incorrectly. I would also get pretty mad if they changed the logo into something cornered or talking (yeah, I'm crazy but nowadays everythings possible ;D ). Classic millionaire ftw!

I voted pre-clock. It's what I was originally obsessed with as a child, and to me it's still the best format we have. One of my biggest problems with the clock was the first five questions - 15 seconds is too short; it puts too much pressure on you to answer. This is especially true if you wait for the host to finish reading (which I realize isn't required, but we're not all Alan Carver!) Need I remind anybody of this?: (Side note: If the ad shown next to the video isn't the same when you watch, then right now in my preview it's for Fresca. What a depressing coincidence. ) If anything, the first ten questions all should have been 30 seconds, OR the clock starts after the choices are read. I know this has been repeated by fans of the show countless times, but I agree with them. I guess I can accept everything as long as they don't tie people to towers and let them fall down if they answer a question incorrectly. That would pretty much be Downfall in a few words (which I admit I liked). Were you trying to refer to it, or was this just a coincidence?

To be honest, I don't even know Downfall ;D. I was referring to "101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow", because it's just ridiculous. Well, I've only seen the German version. Let's just say they like to make things way more dramatic than they really are . And combining that 'drama' with a bunch of people who dare call themselves celebrities is just too much for me. Anyway, I agree with you about the lack of time on the first questions. If they really need to introduce a clock, okay, but they should at least give everybody 30 seconds for the first 5 questions, 1 minute for the middle tier and 2 minutes for the last five questions. Having to answer a $ 500,000 question in just 45 secs is virtually impossible (and Ken Basin had lifelines, so that doesn't really count).

Ah, I like that show as well, at least the UK version which is the only version I've seen - except that it's too drawn out. Make it quick, and they'd have themselves a winner. Heck, if they brought it over to the States it could be a nice sister to show to Wipeout (which, actually, Downfall was last summer). And I'd might as well link a video for Downfall as well , so here's that: Go to about 5:30, and you'll see what I thought you were talking about. ^^ And so this isn't completely off-topic, I'll reply to the second half of your post now . I agree with your time changes - I'd completely forgotten about the upper-upper tier! 45 seconds is ridiculous, even more so than the 15 seconds for the first five. I think Australia got it right with a shot clock of 60 seconds if the host felt that the contestant was taking too long; that way the contestant isn't limited to under a minute to answer a hard question, but they're also not taking half an hour to answer, either. Also, the UK got the clock completely wrong by counting running out of time as a wrong answer. It's bad enough that you're under time pressure; you shouldn't have to lose money for not answering in time. (However, not having the clock on the final five questions at all was a good decision.)

I also have a crazy love on the Time Clock format. It does make the show more dramatic. There should be no one who thinks slowly about questions, like me (to be honest). This format has the most crystalized graphics and the music which usually flutters the competitor on the hot seat. At the first time I watched the video of one episode of Time Clock format, I guessed that the the format would be the most loved format ever.

Truthfully, it doesn't matter what kind of format is very good or very worse. What matters is that can you adapt to the changes while still holding to the new traditions. If you can't you're more likely to hate it, but if you can tolerate it, then you'll have at the least respect to it.

Wow, that is very philosophical! However, I think that the more the new format deviates from the original version, the harder it is for die-hard fans to adapt to the changes. If you compare the criticism on the time format and the one on the shuffle format, I actually read many times, that 'the ticking is annoying' or that 'the contestants don't have time to think anymore' but hardly anyone doubted that this wasn't 'Who wants to be a millionaire?'. On the other hand, a bunch of people said that shuffle millionaire 'just isn't millionaire for them' anymore or that it's 'weird without the hotseat'. RyanZ: lol, downfall at least has a concept, but all i saw from '101 ways' was people dropping out of the game the stragest ways. Still, I'm no fan of wanton destruction . Incidentally, I also think that the British approach to the clock is a bit flawed. It's certainly good that they remove the clock for the last 5 questions, but letting the player drop down to the safety net or even leave with nothing is stupid.
