Shah Rukh Khan on KBC & Slumdog Millionaire

Indian superstar SRK recently talked about why he turned down the role of host in Slumdog Millionaire. SRK was hosting KBC at the time, as he was filling in for an ailing Amitabh Bachchan. In his response, SRK commented that he felt the host character in the movie was too mean-spirited and that conflicted with his hosting duties on the real show.

I always wondered why neither KBC host appeared in the film, but now we know why. Bachchan was ill during production even if he’d wanted to play the role, and Shah Rukh Khan objected to the character’s portrayal. Slumdog is a great film, but I can’t help but agree with SRK. Making the host an antagonist was an odd choice that is at odds with how Millionaire hosts around the world behave. I know it’s a work of fiction, but of all people on the show’s production team it felt strange to depict the host in that manner. Sounds like SRK took his real life responsibilities as host very seriously.

Making the host an antagonist is very counter to the Millionaire franchise we know, but one can't deny it makes for a better movie. The protagonist is facing adversity from all directions, and prevails in every way.
