As I am watching the current greek season, I've noticed many times that when the camera shows the face of either host's or contestant's monitor, it appears completely black like it's switched off.As I remembered from earlier seasons, of both original and hot seat format, current question and some stats were clearly visible when the camera showed the monitor's face. Are the new monitors "invisible" to the camera or they are non-functional and kept only for decorative purpose?I supposed that there were maybe some larger screens on the "4th wall" behind the cameras where both host and contestant can see the question, rendering the in front of seats monitors useless, but I am not completely convinced that this is the case because during the episode the host and the contestant seem to look towards their monitors, and it wouldn't make sense if they were fully blank. It maybe has to do with the angle of the shot, maybe monitors are running on too low brightness making the image invisible to the camera.Does this also apply to other countries versions? screenshot

That's very interesting to see... As I can recall, the United States versions from 1999-2009 both the host's and contestant's screens were both on and clearly seen briefly during some camera angles. I'm very surprised on why the Greek version's monitors are off in that screenshot. Perhaps they use monitors off-camera but I find that very odd to do considering that the contestant could look over and see what the host was looking at.

What baffles me is the fact that’s contestants are constantly looking towards their monitor while thinking their answer. If the monitor was off, they should be looking sideways, where the hypothetical hidden monitor is located. So my guess is that the combination of too low brightness of the monitor and the very bright spotlights above the seats and around the set is making it hard for the screen’s image to be visible from they camera’s “eye”,the same way as it is difficult to use your smarphone or tablet outdoors on a sunny day if brightness is set too low.On other countries currently running seasons (e.g. Bulgaria),is the image of the monitors visible on tv?

They probably applied a privacy shield to the screen.

They probably applied a privacy shield to the screen. That is indeed correct! I remember talking to a person who was on the Crew for rigging and derigging the current set in the UK, this was around early 2020 when I spoke to him online. We talked about the set's monitors and what was used, funny enough I was thinking the same thing as well! And was curious if he knew. I mentioned the exact same question to him, he said they used a privacy shield on the monitors, I believe he also sent a link to which kind of ones were used, but I do not remember the name, nor have the link, since this conversation was long ago.

Privacy shield?I didn't know that there is such a thing.Does it make the screen appear dark when looked by angle and not straight on?

Another cool topic. That makes sense for the privacy shield explaining the blank monitors from the side angles.
It makes me also wonder about the reasoning behind this choice, whether it's for aesthetics or an actual functional purpose. In terms of "Privacy" as a name, that seems like the branded category of the shield, and not an actual purpose to prevent say the audience from peeking at the host's screen. I remember too Chris Tarrant used to say "there's nothing on my screen" to explain how the right answer was only indicated upon it being locked in. I've done a bit of searching on YouTube, and checking from a recent episode here in the UK (from the official channel), we can see another use of the privacy screens. Here's a side by side comparison:
This pic on the right shows it quite clearly for what appears as a plastic looking film covering the screen. It looks like this must be a common theme among versions of the show nowadays for some reason, and perhaps comes as standard with some professional TV monitors even.
Commonly back in the 2000s era during the £32,000+ questions, the host screen could be seen when the extended arm camera would zoom around up close in quite cinematic fashion. I always admired that camera angle for how it added to the dramatic feeling on those higher tier questions. Also I've noticed from the static side camera to the host, it could be seen even more clearly that this example, when a right answer was given.
Which way do we think looks the best between the old vs. new way? I'm leaning towards how it used to be, because it adds an extra element which can be seen. In a way I think it makes the set seem more "alive" when seeing the screens on, as it does look a little odd for appearing to look at an empty black screen. Also when I was younger while watching the show, I was curious what the coloured blocks actually were on the host screen, as I'm sure many of us did! (Of course, knowing now they're for the money to win/lose and current level, etc.)

On greek Hot Seat format, host screen was sometimes visible on some angles. Correct answer on host screen turned green just a second before it was revealed to the player and the viewers

When it comes to privacy shield, I recall a bit from the Marathi (India) version
