For a couple of years during Meredith's run as host, whenever a contestant elected to Ask the Audience, in addition to the in-studio audience, those who became buddies on AOL's IM service with Millionaire's official account had the chance to weigh in on the question being played. Do you think something similar to that would work for today's Millionaire, and why or why not?

I think it would work much better now than it did back then. It's gotta be pretty easy to set up an automated text-based system. I would stay away from AOL of course, since so few people these days remember what AOL is, but so many of them have access to cell phones.

That's true, especially in this day and age. If it were me, I'd probably use Twitter or SMS as a means of getting the viewers involved in the ATA polls. Not sure how that'd play out, though.

I thought about something like this for the game show panels I plan to host. There are plenty of ways technology and social media nowadays can be used for it. Facebook - There are API's to go ahead and collect counts via Facebook's Emotion/Response counting via live video (it's sends out a notification to all those who are online watching). ( = A, = B, etc.) Twitch/YouTube/Hitbox/BeamPro - Easily done via Twitch Chat robot or strawpoll.me voting. You wouldn't necessarily need to go live and show the full live video of the stage. Just go live with a pre-recorded intro video with the instructions (look at Donald Faison's videos whenever WinSanity goes live on GSN), play the ATA Ready tune, start counting off 60-90 seconds to let people connect and vote, then show the results. Then disconnect the feed and continue to the game. OR Go live continuously for one live studio session and let the video stream through. Just have Chris do the pre-recorded spiel whenever ATA is invoked and play it there. ("Hey thanks for watching... stay live on ______ and keep an eye on the screen for your chance to play.") Then back in the studio, enter the results... Let Chris go through it like Meredith did and play through. Only problem is that doing any of these (even the original AOL one) adds a lot of time to the wait for the results.

I remember when Millionaire did this with Meredith as host. You had to add MillionaireIM to your friends list and the question would pop up whenever a contestant needed help during taping. I always looked forward to a question showing up on my screen. You had to be quick as there was a certain time frame you had to answer in. I remember the IM poll being pretty unreliable during the show, but it was still fun! SMS messaging IMO would be the best way to do this now. I would definitely sign up. Thanks for making this thread! I enjoy remembering the days of MillionaireIM and You're in the Hotseat Home game.

I liked the concept of the online poll, but the problem is that you have absolutely NO idea just how many people are actually voting in it. At least with the studio audience you can get a rough idea as to what a certain amount of people think. It was interesting to see how the regular audience vs. online audience polls would differ in terms of what they thought the right answer was. It made the game play more interesting, but at the same time, it ended up also becoming somewhat of a burden for the contestant, cause then there's an EXTRA factor being thrown in in regards to trusting what other people think. It would be cool to see the audience online polls brought back to get more people involved in the show again, but they DEFINITELY need to use something else besides AOL.

Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot stick.
Today, online miscreants have the technology at their fingertips to spam polls. ATA-online would be the most unreliable lifeline in the show's history if implemented today.

Not sure, but I have to think whatever they had in 2004, it's much more pervasive today.

To be honest, AOL is very old to use it in 2017. I think that it should stay like we have.

They wouldn't think to use AOL in 2017, because nobody uses it in 2017. On the other hand, virtually everyone with a cell phone uses it to text, and it should be super easy for Millionaire to set up a text alert system for when a contestant uses Ask the Audience.

Maybe Facebook Messenger might work? Whoevers in charge of social media on the show, sets up a bot on the Millionaire Facebook page, and when Ask the Audience is used, Chris will prompt the TV audience to vote through Messenger, then there would be a commercial break to count the votes (as there would be a lot) then come back from the break and reveal results.

PollEverywhere would be the best for something like this as it can aggregate SMS voting, Twitter voting, webpage voting, and embeddable iframe voting into one poll.

Maybe expand the bot to other social media platforms and not limit it to only Facebook. Twitter, Instagram, SMS would all contribute greatly to the polls.
