This is what led to the producers (allegedly) instructing future contestants who made it to the $1m question with lifelines intact, to use those lifelines even if they were sure of the answer. Bob House and David Goodman come to mind, having known the answers to their questions, but burned their lifelines, either just to make sure, for the heck of it, or possibly because they were told to. I'm sure they used them not because they were told to, but because they knew there was no reason not to. Carpenter not at least using his 50:50 was reckless, no matter how sure he was.

In my opinion, I don't think we'll ever see anyone get to the million dollar question again with an actual lifeline on the table. The last person to have that availability was Ken Basin, almost 10 years ago.
Then again, it really makes you wonder if anyone will actually get up to that $1,000,000 question at some point again anyway.
As far as John Carpenter goes, I'm just glad he didn't overlook anything and got all the questions right especially with how he finished the game with two lifelines still there. (and I mean you could still count the PAF too since he didn't actually try to get help from it) Everyone remembers his win very well, but if he answered the last question incorrectly, I wonder if it would've had even more views for how infamous it would've been.

The only way we'll get another MDQ in play is if they decide to finally ease up on the questions. I'm not saying put a Carpenter stack in there, but if difficulty is at 10 right now, bring it down to about a 7.

We can still get a Million Dollar Question if people have the guts to go for it. Some higher amount questions, in my opinion, are still easier than some others. It should be tough, but this is ridiculous. For the show to go that long without a Million Dollar Question or winner says a lot, and not about the contestants, many of whom are iconic Jeopardy champions who can't get to that point.
Bob House pretty much knew his question, regarding the lifelines, though he was smart to use all the help available to him. He reminds me of Pat Gibson in Britain, who was relatively sure he knew the answer, but used both of his lifelines, to astonishingly take two of them to the final question in the U.K.
As far as Carpenter, well, Ken Basin wouldn't have the infamy he does had Carpenter missed after that.

Twas hard to find what dead threat you've bumped to break the wonderful news to you. I was afraid of taking the glory away from GSK with his memes, afraid of being the rain cloud in the thread that's what, FOURTEEN years dead? Yeah, I just wasn't sure, man. Either way, this seems like the fantastic place to tell you that you are today's LUCKY WINNER of a 20% warning level! 10% for bumping dead threads and another 10% for making me laugh! Congratulations! Seriously, though, jeremie I know you're new here, but we can't have you bumping dead threads, especially ones that are almost half my age. Welcome aboard, but please read the rules and use your noodle.
