I saw this a few days ago, and what a remarkable run and quest Martin Flood had.
Many of us know that Martin was suspected of cheating, to which I ask why? Sure, maybe it's not conventional that he was talking out loud and thinking without using lifelines, but I'm not sure how anybody could watch Charles Ingram's run and then this run and tell me they were similar.
Charles did not have good knowledge on his set of questions. Martin certainly did, not using a lifeline until $32,000. It was incredibly brave not to use a lifeline for $64,000, $125,000 or $250,000.
Plus, if you watch Charles Ingram's run, knowing he cheated, it's obvious he cheated because of the way he acted and his demeanor. I'm not sure if he would have gotten away with it, but it would have been much less obvious if he was a better actor about it and had more knowledge. To say it's not Paris, it's Berlin, then it's Paris, and the same thing of having never heard of a Googol and then saying it is a Googol, something was up. What really got me was his question for 125,000 and he said, "I think I'm going to go for Holbein." *Cough* "Yeah, um, Holbein."
The thing about Martin is that he was dedicated to this. He specifically wanted to win the million, and he got it. The amount of studying and preparation is impressive, showing that much dedication.
howtowingameshows.com/2013/08/22/interview-who-millionaire-winner-martin-flood-part-1/ - This in particular fascinates me.
"And I went to the local RSL, and joining the trivia table, one of the ladies on the table said “are you going to be coming regularly?” And this was my first trivia night. I said ” I’m going to come here each week and I’m going to go on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and I’m going to win a million dollars”. I wasn’t saying it for her benefit, I was saying it for my own; to convince myself that this was what I was going to do."
That kind of confidence, that much devotion, that is something both Martin and Rob Fulton clearly had, and isn't it something that Rob was in the audience when Martin won the million as well, but I'm not sure who was more dedicated, more passionate, to winning the million between the two of them.
howtowingameshows.com/2015/07/21/interview-australias-millionaire-millionaire-rob-the-coach-fulton-part/"I would write out many times in large notebooks, “I will be the first person in Australia to win Millionaire”, similar to Bart’s blackboard punishment in the Simpsons’ intro."
He did exactly that, but that's something that really stuck out to me when reading this article, which by the way, was a great interview, both Rob's and Martin's.
finance.nine.com.au/2016/10/07/14/12/how-martin-flood-made-his-fortune"I started to learn lists, eg Academy Awards, Wimbledon winners and all that stuff."
Lists. That's another thing Rob and Martin had in common. I highly recommend watching this video of Eddie's segment with Rob after Rob won the million, and the lists he compiled in preparation for his big win:
It starts at around 57:00. I know I was truly in awe when I watched this video of Rob's devotion.
Martin also starred on this quiz show, as well:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Master_(Australian_game_show)I know I've linked this on here before, but you can see Rob and Martin in action together here, along with Millionaire alums Trevor Sauer, William Laing and Maria McCabe.
I'm happy I finally got to see Martin's full run, so I'm thankful to WWTBAMClassics, as well as the creator of this thread, for letting us know about it.
