I believe this version was used for some of the European versions in the day they also used a different logo. Specifically I am talking about the Endemol versions like in the Netherlands and Germany. If you look in the ASCAP Repertory archive, you can see that there are separate entries listed for specific versions of Millionaire. The Danish, Dutch and Norwegian versions are listed separately for example. But only a few countries are separately listed, not all. My guess would be that the Strachans composed slightly different versions for those countries who were among the first to buy the format. In the early days local versions were allowed to differentiate themselves a little. Here's the 1999 Dutch intro by the way (because of the applause it is hard to hear if it contains a louder arpeggio): www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0L_8d2RNGI

Well, I can't tell, at all, if it's the music I found because of the audience applauding wildy. Your theory is good and maybe true for certain countries but I think, in the video that you linked, it is not the music with a louder arpeggio because it ends differently than the version on Strachan's site. Maybe, it's another variant of the one with the louder arpeggio, that ends differently, but I don't think the version we're talking about is the one in the video. As Tim0n's theory, yours is good too. By the way, I can't stop listening to it ! Ta da da poin poin ta da da da da...

Oh ! There's another thing I'd like to mention. If you listen carefully to the first 1998 intros, (without any sfx) you could hear two times in it, for few seconds, some arpeggio. Listen carefully and tell what you think:
The second time, it's harder to hear but the first time it's quite clear.
You can hear it the first time around 25-26 secs and the second time around 29-30 secs. You can hear it in the left stereo speaker/headphone.

That sound you guys are talking about is still in the "main theme" that we all know, it's just not as prominent.
